Hulu and cable

Hulu Will Soon Require Viewers To Have A Cable Subscription

Reading headlines like this makes me sad. This lovely Oatmeal comic strip elegantly sums up how I feel about the state of TV content.

I’m sure they have good reasons for their decisions, but I find it interesting that hulu is caving in to this so easily. I’m willing to bet a majority of their paying customers subscribe to their service so they can replace cable. There isn’t any value to hulu anymore if they switch to a model where its viewers need a cable subscription. It feels backwards. Why would anyone pay for hulu anymore?

There’re really few things cable is good for nowdays, save for live event broadcasts… and even then. Many of the more prominent events, like the Olympics and other major sports events, are slowly coming online in the last few years. Lots of them are now broadcasted and streamed live over the web for free. Plus, there’re also services like NHL Game Center Live that’ll stream everything else live for the more dedicated fans.

And to be clear, these services aren’t particularly cheap. I’m not complaining because of cost; I’m willing to pay for content I care about, as I happily did for NHL Game Center Live. I just want to pay for it piecemeal.

Most of the content on cable is not interesting to me. I like only paying for the content I want, at the time I want watch it.

Maybe some day in the future… :)

LESS

LESS

I recently discovered this neat little “tool”, and it just blew my mind a little.

The official description on their site is this:

LESS extends CSS with dynamic behavior such as variables, mixins, operations and functions.

This sentence makes a lot more sense once you look at the sample code. The thing I love most about it is that it makes CSS reusable. And we all know all the wonderful benefits that comes with code reuse. Gone are the days when I would have to find-and-replace colour codes in my stylesheet whenever I decided to tweak the colour scheme.

And what’s more? It claims that it is backwards compatible with CSS.

I’m actually a pretty stoked about this. Can’t give to give this a try!

Hello world!

Well, hello world indeed.

Not sure what finally pushed me to do this, but I just tore down everything from my old domain and decided to start over. I’ve been meaning to update it for a while. After all, this is my ‘official’ dot com domain, but the state it was in previously just wasn’t very representative of who I am now and where I am in my professional career. Not surprising, as I did create that first version back in my early university days.

I initially tried just updating the previous site by applying a new layout and theme, but there was just too much… “baggage”. Even the content no longer represented me, so I figured it was cleaner to just restart. Yay one-click installers that made this process fairly painless! :)

And so here I am.

I used a canned WordPress layout just to get this up and running quickly. I’ll probably slowly tweak it to my taste. For now, sit back, relax, and enjoy.
